Implants and Other Ways to Replace Teeth

Missing teeth should always be replaced to avoid shifting and compensation of the surrounding teeth. What are the ways you can replace missing teeth? Implants, bridges and dentures are all viable choices. Dr. Pham at the Center for Beautiful Smiles is your Chula Vista implant dentist and gives you a brief overview of these replacement choices.
Implants: Implants look and function exactly like natural teeth but are in fact replicas that are mounted on titanium posts which are fused into the jaw. The procedure takes several visits and the whole process, including the fusing time, takes about 4 months. It is considered the best way to replace a tooth, and research shows that the adjacent teeth have the best survival rates compared to other forms of tooth restoration.
Bridges: Bridges are porcelain replacements mounted on metal supports that are attached to teeth on either side of the missing tooth/teeth and thus “bridge” or fill the gap. The treatment requires two visits to complete.
Dentures: Dentures are replicas of a portion or all of your teeth (partial or full) and are made to fit over your gums so that you may remove them for cleaning or as necessary. An impression of your teeth is made at the first visit. A dental lab then creates a completely customized denture which will be fit and adjusted at a subsequent visit.
Tooth preparation, timing and cost are elements that most patients take into consideration when deciding with their dentist the best way to replace a missing tooth. Dr. Pham is happy to discuss these options with you. If you have any questions about these procedures or what to do when you are missing a tooth, please call us today at (619) 421 2155.
