Dr. Stephen O'Donnell is a compassionate pediatric dentist dedicated to creating positive dental experiences for children of all backgrounds and abilities. A graduate of the University of Southern California School of Dentistry, Dr. O'Donnell was honored with the prestigious Floyde E. Hogeboom Award for excellence in pediatric dentistry. He completed his specialized training at USC and Miller Children's Hospital Long Beach, where he gained extensive experience working with children with complex medical needs.

Dr. O'Donnell's approach to pediatric dentistry is rooted in the belief that every child deserves individualized care in a warm, welcoming environment. He specializes in treating children with special healthcare needs and has valuable experience working with interdisciplinary teams to care for patients with conditions ranging from craniofacial disorders to hemophilia and cancer.

"My goal is to make every child's visit a positive experience," says Dr. O'Donnell. "By treating each young patient as an individual and providing gentle support, we can build confidence that lasts a lifetime."

One of Dr. O'Donnell's most memorable experiences came from volunteering at a mobile dental clinic in California's Central Valley, where he helped transform a fearful kindergartener's perspective on dental care through patience and personalized attention. This experience reinforced his commitment to creating trusting relationships with both children and their families.

When not helping young patients achieve healthy smiles, Dr. O'Donnell can be found hiking with his wife and young daughter, paddleboarding, or exploring San Diego County's diverse restaurant scene. As a self-proclaimed "big kid at heart," he connects with his patients by wearing fun Pokemon and Mario character socks and using storytelling to make dental visits enjoyable.

Dr. O'Donnell's unique combination of advanced training, compassionate care, and playful spirit makes him a trusted partner in your child's dental health journey. Dr. Eric Le Orthodontist
Dr. Eric Le is a dedicated orthodontist at Coastal Kids Dentistry & Orthodontics, where he brings a passion for transforming smiles and building confidence in children and families. Dr. Le’s journey into orthodontics began at age 13, inspired by his own experience with braces. His curiosity about his treatment and the positive impact it had on his life sparked a lifelong commitment to helping others achieve healthy, beautiful smiles.

Dr. Le earned his dental degree from the prestigious University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. With a strong foundation in dental science and a genuine love for working with children, he is committed to making every visit a positive and comfortable experience. Dr. Le believes that a trip to the orthodontist should be fun and anxiety-free, and he strives to create an environment where kids feel heard, understood, and excited about their smile journey.

As a self-proclaimed “kid at heart,” Dr. Le connects easily with young patients—whether it’s chatting about the latest video games, sports, or superhero movies. He believes in empowering children by explaining each step of their treatment, setting clear expectations, and answering all their questions. By making the process transparent and approachable, Dr. Le helps reduce anxiety and builds trust with his patients and their families.

One of Dr. Le’s most memorable experiences was helping a young patient who was initially anxious and self-conscious about her crowded teeth. Through reassurance and personalized care, Dr. Le guided her through treatment without extractions, and after 15 months, she left with a radiant smile—and a newfound dream of becoming an orthodontist herself.

Outside the clinic, Dr. Le enjoys golfing (including a memorable round with Samuel L. Jackson!), traveling, and exploring new activities. You might find him relaxing at La Jolla Beach or trying out local eateries. He’s always eager to connect with the community and is open to participating in local events and charities.

Dr. Le’s love for dentistry runs in the family—his parents are physicians, his brother is training as a medical doctor, and more than a dozen relatives are in the dental field, including his fiancée, who is an endodontist. This strong family tradition in healthcare inspires him daily to provide compassionate, high-quality care.

Fun Facts About Dr. Le:
  • Favorite children’s book: Harry Potter series
  • Favorite childhood snack: Spam Musubi
  • Favorite activity with family and friends: Golf
  • Favorite way to make kids laugh: Finding out their favorite YouTuber and sharing a laugh

Why Orthodontics?
Orthodontics clicked for me because I’ve always loved puzzles, and treatment planning feels like building a puzzle that’s different for every patient. I genuinely enjoy working with people who are motivated to improve their smiles and then watching them achieve those goals through months (and sometimes years) of steady, intentional effort. I also love getting to know patients and families over time—orthodontics creates that connection because we see each other every 1–2 months, often over several years, and sometimes for multiple members of the same family.

Philosophy of Care
My top priority is building trust with both patients and parents—trust that lasts throughout treatment. When families feel heard, involved, and confident in the plan, the overall experience improves and outcomes tend to improve too. I always strive to make sure every patient feels listened to without judgement before leaving my chair, regardless of age.

Working with Kids and Families
A lot of young patients arrive to an orthodontic consultation feeling nervous or scared, and I love being able to turn that into confidence. Helping kids feel empowered by their smile and their treatment—and seeing how that shift can positively affect the whole family—is deeply fulfilling. Kids also bring energy, curiosity, and honesty into the clinic, and that makes every day feel genuine and never dull.

A Memorable Experience
During residency, I treated a patient with sleep apnea, breathing issues, and an asymmetric bite due to a lower jaw deviation. She was often sleepy during visits, and I could hear how much she struggled to breathe through her nose while in my chair. After orthodontic expansion, it was clear she felt significantly better—and she understood the difference treatment was making in her daily life. She became incredibly motivated: her brushing improved, she wore elastics consistently to correct her bite, and she never broke a bracket. By the time I graduated, she was on track to finish treatment early with complete resolution of her asymmetric bite—an outcome that felt uncertain at the start. Her case is a constant reminder of what’s possible when patients and doctors are unified in goals and effort.

Fun Facts and Personal Touch
• Surprising fun fact: I have never had a cavity.
• Free time: lifting weights at the gym, kayaking in La Jolla Cove, oil painting (since I was 12), binging a good TV show, and exploring San Diego (most recently wine tasting in Temecula).
• Favorite local spot: Cliffhanger Cafe at the glider port in Torrey Pines—I take friends there and the view never fails to amaze.

What’s Unique About My Approach with Kids
I strongly believe in involving kids—even young children—in their own care. Helping them understand progress and milestones keeps motivation high, and it’s incredibly rewarding when they not only feel excited to get braces off but also recognize how much their smile has improved. Practically, I often speak directly to patients during appointments and then repeat information as needed for parents. Even when kids don’t fully grasp every detail, it gives them the chance to ask questions and actively participate in their treatment.

Dream Superpower
X-ray vision. We take periodic x-rays to monitor jaw growth and movement under the gums, but being able to see everything in real time would be incredibly convenient.

Favorites
• Favorite children’s book/story: Percy Jackson series. It’s been fun seeing a new generation discover it again with the TV adaptation.
• Favorite childhood snack/treat: CHEESE—still eat a Babybel every day with lunch.
• Favorite activity with family/friends: talking and catching up over a good meal or a scenic walk.
• Favorite part of a clinic day: showing patients the progress they’re making and the milestones they’ve achieved—orthodontics is slow and steady, but it’s always amazing to look back and see how far they’ve come.
• Favorite way to make kids laugh or feel at ease: connecting over current family-friendly movies (debating the best Spider-Man usually reduces anxiety), joking about how old I am compared to them (parents laugh too), and narrating what I’m doing when something is new—some kids feel better knowing what to expect, and if others zone out from boredom, I take it as a sign they’re calm and comfortable.

Community
As someone originally from the Bay Area, I’ve found San Diego incredibly welcoming both at work and outside the office. The extra sunshine definitely helps. I’m excited to continue getting to know the community through my work at CKDO.

Family Inspiration
I’m the first dentist/doctor in my family, and I’m deeply grateful for the sacrifices made across generations that gave me the opportunity to pursue this path. I try to honor those sacrifices every day through my approach to patient care as an orthodontist.

Community Involvement
I’m a volunteer faculty member at UCSD’s medical school, specifically supporting the free dental clinic run by the Pre-Dental Society at UCSD. I volunteer monthly at the orthodontic clinic.

FAQ

Questions
At what age should my child first visit the dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children should have their first dental visit by their first birthday or within 6 months after their first tooth appears, whichever comes first.

How often should my child have dental checkups?

Children should visit the dentist every 6 months for regular checkups and cleanings. However, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits based on your child's individual oral health needs.

Are dental X-rays safe for children?

Yes, dental X-rays are safe for children. Modern dental offices use digital X-rays that emit very low radiation levels. Additionally, protective lead aprons and thyroid collars are used during X-rays to minimize exposure. X-rays are only taken when necessary for diagnostic purposes.

How can I prevent cavities in my child's teeth?

To prevent cavities: 1) Maintain good oral hygiene, brushing twice daily and flossing, 2) limit sugary foods and drinks, 3) use fluoride toothpaste, 4) consider dental sealants, 5) maintain regular dental checkups, 6) encourage healthy eating habits, and 7) supervise brushing for young children.

At what age should my child get an orthodontic evaluation?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, there's a mix of baby and permanent teeth, allowing orthodontists to identify potential problems early.

Is Invisalign suitable for children/teens?

Invisalign can be suitable for teens, and there's even a specific product called Invisalign Teen. However, eligibility depends on various factors, including: 1) the type and severity of orthodontic issues, 2) the patient's maturity and responsibility level, 3) whether all permanent teeth have erupted, and 4) your orthodontist can determine if Invisalign is appropriate for your child's specific case.

Do braces hurt?

While braces don't hurt during application, you may experience some soreness for a few days after getting them and after adjustment appointments. This discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
